The conquest of Canaan began in the desert. God used the wilderness experience to teach the people faith. Before the victory in the battles of Canaan they first battled fear in the desert.
The Book of Numbers began at Mt Sinai. The Exodus was completed. The people camped at Sinai for thirteen months. In the fourteenth month God tells the people that He will lead them up into the land of Canaan. He promised to give them this land as their own.During this time in history Israel was first established as a distinct nation.
God told Moses to number the people. Everyone was counted except the Levites who serviced the tabernacle. God instructed them in how to worship, remain pure, prepare for battle and how to fight. They were told how to maintain the tabernacle and how they should walk with the Lord during those years they would be in the desert. God put them through basic training to get them in shape for the journey ahead.
Some of the lessons we learn from their desert experiences:
1) Complaining is contagious. Hold your tongue so you do not infect others.
2) Doubting can be disastrous. When you doubt God’s ability to get you through look back on the miles you have already traveled.
3) Wandering is always humbling. When it is dark and there is fear, pray and trust God.
Experiences in life can be the greatest teachers. God allows circumstance and adversity to develop character in our lives. Faith is developed as we learn to trust in Him through the challenges we overcome.
