People rarely begin a road trip without some idea of where they are going. Many take the time to “google” their destination, learn about the sites and attractions along the way, and look for the best route to get there. It is a good idea to plan your travels. An instructor in Bible college was fond of saying, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there!”
Abraham was called to leave his homeland, travel hundreds of miles to an unknown destination, and trust God to make a great nation from one son born to him in his old age. Though he had little knowledge of how the promises were to be fulfilled, Abraham remained faithful to God and followed Him all the days of his life. He became the father of the nation of Israel as well as other middle eastern nations that trace their lineage back to Abraham. His trust in God and confidence in His promises made him the “Father of the Faithful” (Romans 4:11). His promises included land, prosperity, and a posterity (Genesis 22:18). In his seed all the nations were blessed. Jesus was a descendant and a “son of Abraham!”
Even when Abraham was asked to give up his only son of promise, offering him as a sacrifice, he prepared to obey the Lord, confident in God’s ability to restore him to life. (Hebrews 11:17-19). When God saw his willingness to obey, a ram was provided in the brush to take Isaac’s place on the altar of sacrifice.
When you are challenged to trust God even though you cannot see the next step remember the story of Abraham. Stepping out in faith and trusting in God for directions will lead you into a wonderful future of fulfilled promises. You can trust in His Word and hold on to His promises!
