Look on the Fields
Fall in the San Joaquin Valley of California is beautiful. Around Lodi there are some gigantic maple trees that lose the biggest, most colorful leaves you could ever imagine. One year, we decorated our church Thanksgiving banquet with the orange, brown, and yellow colors of Fall. I had the great idea to go to Lodi and pick up some of those huge leaves to use on the tables. As I walked down the cracked, uneven sidewalk picking up leaves, I realized how magnificent are God’s abilities. When the leaves are just the right color and just the right size, it is as if God said, “Now they are yours.” They loosen their grip on the branch and fall at our feet.
When we look on God’s field, it is also beautiful. It is full of diverse individuals composing a mosaic masterpiece of God’s greatness. Each person is unique and special. If we pay attention to God’s timing, the ones that have “let go” are ready for us. They are ready for the Gospel. Hungry and searching, they are the ones we can reach with little effort.
“Lord, help me to pay attention to your field of harvest. When your field is white and ready, then and only then can you lead me to the souls that you have ready for Your Word. Help me to look beyond my own backyard, my own little world into your harvest. Give me the courage to step beyond my surroundings and reach out for a soul that I might miss otherwise.”
