A Fresh Start
Monday morning. Fresh and new. I walked into the classroom and eyed the large black board with pride. You see, last week I was finally chosen to be the chalk board monitor! It was an exciting task for a fifth grader because this job was reserved for the one who was on best behavior the previous week. What a reward!
After school each day I would take the black, soft felt, block in my hand and begin. The eraser absorbed the numbers from Arithmetic. Words that had been so carefully penned in the upper right hand corner disappeared as I swerved my hand back and forth across the surface. Then on Friday afternoon, after a week of intense instruction, most of which ended up on the chalkboard, I wiped it clean with a damp clean cloth. With a feeling of satisfaction I stood back, put my hands on my hips, and surveyed my finished project with pride. It looked as good as new!
“The slate is clean.” “The board is empty.” “Life is a blank canvas.” “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” -- You’ve probably heard it all before, but today brings a new perspective to the old cliches. Today we begin our journey to a new life. The past has passed and the future holds hope with fresh beginnings.
Scripture Reading:
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,
says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
- Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
